In July 2009, the Kenyan Government commisioned the fibre-optic cable linking the country to the rest of the world. More importantly, this development will have a cascade effect in connecting East Africa to the Internet at substantially higher speeds and considerably lower costs, thereby replacing the sluggish and more expensive satellite links that have been a bottleneck for the country's burgeoning business enterprises.
Kenya has a very skilled work force in the ICT industry, including network engineers, software developers, hardware maintenance engineers, systems analysts, and IT consultants, but it has not been able in the recent past to maximize on its potential in the ICT and Business industry due to its poor and costly IT infrastructure. With the advent of the fibre optic cable, this situation will very quickly be reversed and Kenya will become a leading industrial hub giving millions of youth well paying jobs in the next ten years.
The Kenya Government has also pledged to open digital villages around the country to make the country an ICT hub and move it closer to it's Vision 2030 goals. To utilize the cheaper internet for business, our youth need to be properly trained on the ICT process fundamentals, and the numerous ways they can use ICT to do business either at home or in employment.
